# Veneers vs. crowns: *what's the difference?*

> **Quick answer:** A **veneer** is a thin shell that covers only the **front** of a tooth and requires minimal preparation; it is mainly cosmetic. A **crown** covers the **entire** tooth and requires removing much more structure; it is used to protect teeth that are broken, heavily filled or treated with a root canal. Healthy front teeth → veneers. Damaged teeth → crowns.

| | Veneer | Crown |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Covers | Front surface | Whole tooth |
| Tooth preparation | Minimal (thin enamel layer) | Significant (all sides) |
| Main purpose | Appearance | Protection and function |
| Best for | Healthy front teeth | Weak, broken or root-canal teeth; implants |
| Typical material | Porcelain / E-max | Zirconia or E-max |

## Why it matters: over-preparation

Some clinics offer "veneers" but actually place full crowns on healthy teeth, filing them down to small stumps. That is faster and cheaper for the clinic but removes far more tooth than necessary. Ask what will be done to your teeth — a good plan uses veneers where teeth are healthy and crowns only where they are needed. ## Can I combine them?

Yes, and it is common in full-mouth plans: veneers on healthy teeth, crowns on damaged ones, all designed and made in the same lab so the colors match. [About crowns](https://drvictormendoza.com/crowns-colombia/).
